With over two decades of expertise spanning all three levels of government, academia, and industry bodies, Fiona is highly skilled at solving complex urban challenges. Her diverse background includes serving as Executive Officer for the Australian Bicycle Council—where she won a National Bicycling Achievement Award—and lecturing in Recreation Planning at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS).

She is a Registered Landscape Architect and actively contributes to the sector as a National Board Director for Parks and Leisure Australia. She is dedicated to creating healthy, connected, and sustainable communities through innovative infrastructure solutions.

Megan is an urban planner and researcher interested in a deceptively simple question: when a city grows, how do we make sure there is still enough room for people to play, gather, exercise and spend time outdoors?

Her work focuses on public open space provision and the planning decisions that shape it. Megan’s PhD at UTS examined the politics of park provision in Sydney, looking at how land, planning policy, funding, governance and competing priorities come together to determine where parks are provided — and whether enough space is secured in the first place.

Megan has worked across planning, governance, strategy, research and the built environment. She brings a perspective that sits between policy and practice, with a particular interest in what happens between having a good idea for a park and actually getting that park delivered.

For the Leisure Planners Course, Megan will explore the realities of planning for public open space in growing communities, including the assumptions and regulations behind provision, the choices and trade-offs that planners face, and the opportunities to influence open space outcomes before the most important decisions have already been made.
