Community health and wellness at the local level is becoming increasingly important, particularly due to rising chronic disease and ageing populations. Â This practical seminar will highlight how you can help communities to age well and live healthy and active lives through local initiatives, community-based health approaches and state government support.
Hayley Ashworth, PLA SA/NT President, will introduce you to the topic, and our three speakers Jill Andrews (City of Unley), Sue Suter (Health Commit) and Doreen Salon (Office for Ageing Well) will give practical insights on how local and state government and the private sector can realistically make a difference to the health and wellbeing of communities, particularly as people age.

WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION
The Relevance of Community Health and Wellbeing to the Parks and Leisure Industry
ACHIEVING ‘AGEING WELL’ AT THE LOCAL LEVEL
We are all ageing. How well we age will determine our quality of life now AND in the decades to come. As a WHO Age-Friendly City, Unley Council supports people to age well with the delivery of active ageing programs and environmental improvements. As a ‘Future Centenarian’ Jill Andrews is committed personally and professionally to ‘ageing well’. She will share Council’s achievements in this space and what it takes to live a long healthy, happy life.
THE POTENTIAL AND NEED FOR ‘HEALTH IN COMMUNITY’
Sue will highlight how ‘Health in Community’ can be achieved at the local level to increase community wellbeing and help reduce chronic disease, using the 50+ as an example and drawing on the findings of leading health visionary James Maskell. In her practical presentation, Sue will give examples of ‘Health in Community’ approaches and show how health coaching can make a difference.
SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES TO AGE AND LIVE WELL: THE ROLE OF THE OFFICE FOR AGEING WELL
This presentation will highlight the role of the Office for Ageing Well (a state government agency) in supporting older South Australians to remain active and engaged. You’ll learn about key programs and services, such as the Seniors Card, Adult Safeguarding Unit, and available funding opportunities, as well as the Office’s initiatives to tackle ageism.
