Meet the Speakers

Lucas Skelton, SPORTENG Field of Play Team Leader

Lucas offers a comprehensive suite of consultancy services spanning the entire lifecycle of field development. These services encompass site investigation, condition assessment, feasibility studies, master planning, long-term asset planning, technical specifications, sand and turf selection, construction supervision, performance monitoring, coaching, and mentoring.

As the Field of Play Team Lead at SPORTENG, Lucas brings with him 25 years of extensive experience in the field. His team collaborates closely with Project Managers and Civil Design Engineers to tailor field designs to meet clients’ needs. They start by investigating sites thoroughly to gather data, then use this to create custom plans. During construction, they ensure quality and oversee material inspections. Before completion, SPORTENG Field of Play Team conducts tests to ensure the field meets standards.

Lucas is also an esteemed member of the Australian Sports Turf Management Association, further enhancing his expertise and credibility in the industry.

Jonathan Douglas, SPORTENG Field of Play Consultant based in NSW

Jonathan is a qualified turfgrass agronomist with 8 years of experience in the Australian construction industry. He has worked on high-profile projects like Allianz Stadium, Brookvale Oval, and the NSW Cricket Academy, as well as re-surfacing the SCG, Gabba, and Adelaide Oval.

Previously, Jonathan worked at private golf clubs in the US and UK, managing in-house construction projects. He also served as a Turfgrass Consultant, providing technical advice and best practices for sports turf and agricultural issues.

Jonathan’s extensive experience in sports field construction and turf management makes him well-equipped to meet any club’s facility goals.

John Neylan, SPORTENG Senior Turf Agronomist John Neylan 

After eight years of running his own turfgrass consulting and research company and 11 years with the Australian Golf Course Superintendents Association (AGCSA) before that, 3 of which he was General Manager, John joined SPORTENG as Senior Turf Agronomist and is recognised as one of the industry experts.
John has extensive experience in undertaking research and consultancy with a wide range of clients including golf, sportsfields, racetracks and local government and has expertise in soils, drainage, water management and turfgrass selection and evaluation.

As well as working with the Australian Golf Union as an advisory agronomist for the Australian Open, John also lectures in soils, drainage, irrigation management, project management, environmental management and construction at several university campuses.
