Dictionary of Key Terms

The paper “Dictionary of Key Terms” explains the three key concepts of park, recreation and open space, then includes another six pages of definitions of common terms found in park, land and natural resource management.

The working paper “The Definition of “Open Space” and Related Concepts in Queensland” offers a history of the use of the terms ‘open space’, ‘regional parks’ and ‘landscape’ and an overview of international and interstate usage.

The report Classification Framework for Public Open Space aims to “[e]ncourage planning and management agencies and authorities to adopt common terminology and enable comparative assessments of open space provision and function, both locally and regionally. …Within this document, POS refers to urban green
spaces: parklands, play areas, playing fields, bushland, greenways and other similar spaces people use for recreation, sport and social interaction.”

Outdoor Recreation: Key Concepts, Trends, Issues and Stakeholders is a 1999 In-Service Training manual by Queensland’s Department of Tourism, Sport and Racing. (file still to come).
