For a regional landscape to properly function as the custodian of these values whilst providing the essential support functions for nearby urban areas, it needs to have the ability to perform the necessary functions required of it by both urban and rural communities. A fragmented landscape cannot do so as it needs to exist either as larger spatial units or in a linked network form. Hence it is this latter notion of linking elements of the fragmented landscape that is the subject of this Primer – the Landscape Corridors.
