Parks & Leisure Australia (WA) and Planning Institute Australia (WA) are pleased to announce a series of talks and workshops with renowned international expert and author Dr Tim Gill on child friendly urban design, playspace design and risk in play.
Playspace Design and Risk Workshop with Dr Tim Gill
The time is right for some fresh thinking about the design and management of public play spaces. New ideas about risky play, inclusion, nature and sustainability are fuelling creativity and innovation. At the same time, a growing body of observational evidence from around the world offers compelling insights on playground usage by both children and parents/caregivers: what they do, where they go, how long they stay, and how active they are. Led by global play expert Dr Tim Gill this workshop will dive into the latest ideas, case studies and research findings, sharing insights, standards and play safety, and user behaviour. Whatever your interest in playgrounds, you will not want to miss it.
Dr Tim Gill is a longstanding advocate for child-friendly urban planning and design & author of Urban Playground: How child-friendly planning and design can save cities and No Fear: Growing up in a risk adverse society. Tim is an Ambassador for the Design Council, the UK’s design champion and a former director of the Children’s Play Council (now Play England). He works with national and local governments across the UK and throughout the world, NGOs, leading corporates and built environment practices, education and leisure providers across playground design & risk, public policy, education, child care, planning, transport and urban design.
Tim is one of the architects of risk benefit assessment (RBA), having had a leading role in its development in the UK over two decades. In 2021 he became Chair of the UK Play Safety Forum, a co-author of the government-funded publication Managing Risk in Play Provision: Implementation Guide and the publication Risk Benefit Assessment for Outdoor Play: A Canadian Toolkit.
Places are limited and we encourage you to book early. This workshop has been made possible by the generous support of sponsor Active Discovery and venue partner City of South Perth.
