This study is concerned with the forest and woodland, and reservoir catchment units as described and mapped in Council’s report entitled ‘An Inventory of Conservation Management Units in the City of Brisbane’ (Cameron McNamara, 1985). This investigation only covers the mainland part of the City,
islands within the City boundaries are not included within this investigation.
The specific objectives for this study were:
- to review the current distribution, use and values of bushland in Brisbane
- to document major management issues
- to identify future demands likely to be placed on bushland areas
- to prepare an overall strategy for future bushland use and management
- to recommend appropriate management policies, and
- to identify actions required to implement the recommended strategy.
The intention of the study is to address bushland management at a ‘whole City’ level, and to prepare an overall plan for its future co-ordinated use and management. This report therefore does not deal with every small parcel of bushland within the City. It is primarily concerned with areas of bushland more than 5 ha in size, although there are general references to management of small areas and specific reference to some particular small parcels which are of special interest.
The purpose of this Discussion Paper is to put forward ideas and concepts at a strategic planning level. It is concerned with the application of environmental planning principles to bushland in Brisbane and with the establishment of a ‘sense of direction’ for its future use and management.
