WA Get Out and Play – Take a Risk for Your Child

Community Event for Parents, Educators, Elected Members and Local Governments

In Australia and around the world, the horizons of childhood are shrinking. Children are spending more and more time indoors and in front of screens. Adults are becoming ever more anxious about children’s safety and well-being. We know that children who get the chance to play out of doors grow up healthier and happier. What is more, adult anxieties can end up harming children’s learning and development, fuelling unnecessary fears and undermining trust and confidence in ourselves and our children.

How can parents, educators and campaigners build the case for outdoor play, and for a balanced, thoughtful approach to risk? Based on his influential books No Fear: Growing up in a risk averse society and Urban Playground: child-friendly planning and design can save cities, Dr Tim Gill will make the case for expanding children’s horizons, starting in their own homes, schools, childcare settings and neighbourhoods.

About the presenter:

Tim Gill is an independent scholar, writer and consultant on childhood, and a global advocate for children’s play and mobility. Tim is an Ambassador for the Design Council, the UK’s design champion. He is a former director of the Children’s Play Council (now Play England). His work cuts across public policy, education, childcare, planning, transport, urban design and play-work. It engages with academics, practitioners, policy makers, the media and the wider public.

Please note: this event is aimed at adults, not children.

This event is run in partnership with the City of South Perth and Planning Institute of Australia.
