National Tree Day – Banyule’s Urban Forest Strategy

To mark the occasion of National Tree Day, join Michael Tanner – Manager of Parks & Natural Environment at Banyule City Council to explore their recent development of an updated Urban Forest Strategy.

About National Tree Day – Planet Ark’s National Tree Day started in 1996 and has grown into Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care event. It’s a call to action for all Australians to get their hands dirty and give back to the community. In 2023, National Tree Day is Sunday 30th July.

Banyule City Council’s Urban Forest Strategy

Banyule Council has undertaken a stem and root review of its 2015 Urban Forest Strategy. In August 2023 the revised Urban Forest Strategy will be considered for adoption by Council. The new strategy centres on three key targets and measures that are framed to significantly increase the equity of access to green spaces, while preserving and enhancing the unique biodiversity and conservation values of parts of the municipality. Working with community feedback Banyule has developed canopy targets that; by 2040 will lift the average of all suburbs to at least 27%, create a canopy of at least 45% over the footpath network, and a canopy of at least 50% over the open space paths. The journey to these targets has been bumpy, with lessons learned about community reference groups, values, councillor expectations and positions, and the need for both quick wins and long-term actions on the new generation of urban forest strategies.
