Opened on May 4, 2023, the Ellenbrook Youth Centre provides young residents between the ages of 12-25 with a safe place to socialise, connect, engage and participate in a meaningful manner. The centre is a modern and multi-functional space where young people can access a range of activities, services and supports, including counselling, financial advice, employment and training.
The City of Swan has advocated for a purpose-built youth facility for many years, and young people have been actively engaged in this process. The provision of support and services for young people, children and families is a strategic community priority identified in the City’s Strategic Community Plan. The City recognises the importance of young people who are isolated both geographically and economically – and seeks to improve access to services. The City completed its Youth Strategy in 2018 to guide future planning for the provision of fundamental services and infrastructure.
The City engaged a consultant to prepare a feasibility study, undertake stakeholder engagement, review existing facilities and establish a concept design for a youth centre at Charlie Gregorini Memorial Park in Ellenbrook. This work included extensive consultation with young people in the area, City of Swan officers, potential operators and service providers. A cross-section of youth members, local schools and the broader community were also selected by the project team to form a representative group named the Young Ellenbrook Working Group. Through the engagement process, strong support was shown for a new youth centre and a number of the design ideas were incorporated into the concept and then the full design.
This exciting project is an investment into the future of Ellenbrook and will open up a range of opportunities and make a major difference for young people. This project is jointly funded by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Lotterywest and the City of Swan, with a co-contribution from Ellenbrook Management Pty Ltd.
