The role as an inter-urban break (IUB) is directed at achieving a number of strategic directions for SEQ set out in the SEQ Regional Plan. The IUB acts to limit development pressures on the coastal environment – a key objective of the SEQRP. This is particularly significant for the North East Gold Coast study area because it is adjacent to the fragile ecosystems of southern Moreton Bay.
The Pimpama inter-urban break is preserved and enhanced as a non-urban landscape of regional importance to achieve a green break between the continuous urban corridors from Brisbane City to the northern suburbs of Gold Coast City, and to maintain a significant ecological corridor linking the hinterland area to coastal areas.
This internal paper assesses the current state of the northern Gold Coast IUB, stakeholder consultations, key planning issues (including the diminishing influence of the IUB between Ormeau and Pimpama due to urban development) and policy recommendations.
