Melbournes Open Space

This information sheet summarises the objectives of the Victorian Government’s 1988 Metropolitan Open Space Plan.

It details the background to the first strategy developed by the Metropolitan Town Planning Commission in 1929, which emphasised the importance of locating urban parks within walking distance of residents, recommended that a minimum of 5 acres of land for recreation and sport be provided per 1,000 population and produced a far-sighted plan for the development of a ^stem of parks based largely on Melbourne’s waterways.

The information sheet details the main features of the 1988 plan, which includes: a linear network of open space; a range of recreational settings; and new parks and reserves targetting suburban regions throughout greater Melbourne.
