Urban Conservation Areas

The historic and architectural character of a number of areas in Melbourne’s inner suburbs is protected by provisions in the Melbourne Metropolitan Planning Scheme. In 1983, conservation controls were introduced in areas of special significance within the municipalities of Brunswick, Collingwood, Fitzroy, Melbourne, Richmond, South Melbourne, St Kilda, and Williamstown. This document outlines the history of the urban conservation movement in Melbourne, government steps towards conservation, and a detailed description of urban conservation areas by inner-city municipality.
