This note explains some principles of landscape design, horticulture and ecology for the guidance of design professionals and managers proposing to establish plantings in public spaces such as municipal parks, reserves and roadsides. These areas are here collectively termed ‘reserves’. The note does not address gardening in private spaces such as home gardens where a more eclectic, less functional, higher-maintenance design style can be accepted. The species mentioned are relevant to the eastern States but the principles apply throughout Australasia. The note has an urban focus.
